Early Life and Education

Born in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, Lutz’s passion for theater started at a young age. He began acting while still in high school, showing an early interest in the performing arts. Lutz went on to study at Bloomsburg University, originally pursuing pre-med. However, he soon switched his major to technical theater, foreshadowing his future career.

After graduating from college, Lutz embarked on his long career with the Santa Fe Opera. He started working for them as a stage carpenter in 1979.

Lutz held various positions during his early years at the Santa Fe Opera, gaining experience in different areas of production. He worked as head properties run crew chief and deputy run crew chief in addition to his duties as a stage carpenter.

In 1992, Lutz got the opportunity to become the Opera’s properties manager. He excelled in this role, eventually rising to the position of properties director. As director, Lutz oversaw all aspects of the props department. His responsibilities included:

  • Hiring and supervising 39 staff members and apprentices each season
  • Recruiting extra local hires as needed
  • Overseeing procurement, construction, and maintenance of all props

Coordinating with Production Teams

  • Serving as a liaison between designers, directors, and production teams
  • Ensuring props meet the specific needs of each show

Maintaining Quality Standards

  • Upholding high standards for realism, historically accuracy, and overall quality
  • Leveraging his expertise to elevate each production

Mentorship and Community Involvement

Beyond his work at the Opera, Lutz contributed to the larger theater community through mentorship and education. He taught workshops and courses at festivals across the country as a member of the Society of Properties Artisan and Managers.

Lutz was also heavily involved with the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). He participated in multiple capacities, including:

  • Leading allied crafts sessions focused on props
  • Constructing props for festival productions
  • Conducting interviews and providing guidance to students
