Darren Verderber Obituary: Remembering Darren Verderber’s Life
Darren Verderber was a 21-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department, working at Engine Company 116. He loved being a firefighter and took immense pride in his duty to help others.
Outside of his service, Verderber was a devoted family man to his wife and three children. He enjoyed football, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, and spending time outdoors.
Verderber made a profound impact on fellow firefighters and the Chicago residents he served over his decorated career. His sacrifice and memory will never be forgotten.
Line of Duty Death
On August 6th, Verderber was on duty responding to a fire in the Gage Park neighborhood. He was struck by falling debris at the scene and transported to Christ Hospital for treatment.
Tragically, Verderber succumbed to his injuries, becoming the 16th Chicago firefighter to die in the line of duty since 1998. His loss has devastated the department and community.
An investigation into the circumstances of Verderber’s passing remains ongoing as fellow firefighters mourn the death of their colleague. The Chicago Fire Department has provided counseling and support to members struggling with this tragedy.
Honoring His Life and Sacrifice
On Tuesday, August 8th, fallen firefighter Verderber was transferred from Christ Hospital to Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in a solemn procession, with firefighters lining the route to pay their respects.
A visitation will take place at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 15 from 3:00 – 8:00 PM that evening. The following day, August 16th, a Mass of Christian Burial will occur at 10:00 AM at St. Linus Catholic Church.
The outpouring of grief over Verderber’s passing is a testament to his selfless sacrifice for Chicago. He gave his life while answering the call of duty. Verderber’s legacy will echo through the department and community for generations.
Though no words can ease the pain of this tragic loss, Verderber’s loved ones and fellow firefighters find solace knowing he is forever a hero among the ranks of the brave who gave their lives to protect Chicago.
