Though her time with us was cut far too short, Stephanie lived her life to the fullest. She made the world a little brighter through her selfless acts and warm heart. Her memory will remain a blessing to many.
Details of the Tragic Crash
On the morning of August 6th, Stephanie was a passenger in a Honda CRV driven by her husband Bruce Schneggenburger, 56. As they traveled southbound on US-221 near Woodstown Road in Ashe County, hazardous weather conditions created visibility issues.
A GMC Canyon driven by Nicholas Sponholz, 21, crossed over the center line and collided head-on with the Schneggenburgers’ vehicle around 2:30 PM. Stephanie sustained severe injuries in the initial impact.
First responders transported Stephanie to Watauga Medical Center, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries. Her husband Bruce also passed away at the scene of the devastating crash.
Legal Charges and Ongoing Investigation
Following the collision, Nicholas Sponholz was taken into police custody. He faces charges including two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle. Additional contributing factors like failure to maintain his driving lane are also being investigated.
