Philip Sherman: A Life of Song and Service
Philip Sherman dedicated over four decades of his life to serving the Jewish community through music. Born in New York City in 1956, his musical talents were evident from a young age. After receiving his degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1978, Philip was hired as Cantor at Congregation Beth Israel in Manhattan, where he inspired congregants with his powerful voice and uplifting melodies for over 20 years.
In 1999, Philip accepted the honor of becoming Cantor at the prestigious Temple Beth-El in Englewood, New Jersey. Here, he continued touching lives through prayer and song, comforting mourners and enhancing celebrations. His unique voice echoed through the sanctuary on the High Holidays, imbuing the Days of Awe with a profound spirituality.
Beyond his synagogue work, Philip gave back through visiting hospitals, leading youth groups, and performing life cycle events for countless families. His kindness and generosity of spirit were legendary among those who knew him.
Philip Sherman lived life with a melody in his heart, bringing comfort, community and connection through his extraordinary musical talents. Though he will be deeply missed, his voice will continue resonating in the souls of all he inspired.

A funeral service for Philip will be held Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Gutterman and Musicant Jewish Funeral Directors, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601.
Following the funeral service there will be an interment from at Wellwood Cemetery, 1400 Wellwood Avenue, West Babylon, NY 11704.
