David Isbell Obituary: Early Life and Education

Isbell was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 8, 1972. He attended Colonial Heights High School before earning undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Virginia. Isbell completed his residency at Duke University, followed by a cardiology fellowship at UVA.

From an early age, Isbell was devoted to the medical field and helping others through his work. His stellar education prepared him for a career as an exceptional physician.

An Accomplished Cardiologist

Isbell worked as a cardiologist at Prisma Health Cardiology in Columbia, SC for over 17 years. He was highly respected by colleagues for his medical expertise and commitment to patients.

As head of cardiac imaging at Prisma Health, Isbell was instrumental in forming a partnership with the University of South Carolina Athletics Department. He took pride in his work and cared deeply for the wellbeing of others.

A Caring Physician

Isbell’s devotion to his patients was unparalleled. He loved his profession and always made time to explain heart health concerns thoroughly. Patients remember him as a thoughtful, caring doctor who improved their lives through his compassionate care.

The physicians and staff at Prisma Health Cardiology depended on Isbell’s leadership and kindness. He made a difference in the lives of so many who were fortunate enough to receive his medical care.

Family Man and Proud Heritage

Outside his career, Isbell cherished time spent with family, especially his three sons. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, boating and celebrating his Irish heritage with loved ones.

Isbell was a loving father and son, as well as a man who valued connections with extended family. He is survived by his sons William, David Harrison and Henry Grant, his parents Jerry and Brenda Isbell, sisters Deirdre Portwood and Ann Burns, and several nieces.

Honoring His Memory

Isbell’s sudden passing at just 51 years old is a tragedy for all who knew him. However, his legacy will continue on through the many lives he touched as a physician, father, colleague and friend.

A visitation will take place on September 15, 2023 at Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo, SC. A funeral service will follow the next day at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Columbia. Donations can be made to the American Heart Association or Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital in Isbell’s honor.


While the loss of Dr. David Connor Isbell is immense, his memory lives on through the compassionate care he provided patients and his deep love for family. Isbell exemplified dedication and excellence as a cardiologist who improved countless lives. His personal warmth, Irish pride and zest for life touched everyone he knew. Isbell’s legacy is one of devotion, care and family bonds that will never be forgotten.
