Kerry Weems Obituary: The recent passing of Kerry Neil Weems at age 66 has saddened many who knew this dedicated public servant, executive, and friend. Weems lived life to the fullest while making an immense impact through his prolific career in healthcare policy and administration.

Kerry Weems Obituary: Early Life and Education

Weems was born in 1956 in Portales, New Mexico to parents Doye Neil Weems and Anita Brown Weems. He graduated from San Marcos Academy and earned degrees from New Mexico State University as well as an MBA from the University of New Mexico.

In his formative years, Weems split time between New Mexico, Texas and Saudi Arabia for his father’s work. He later settled in Washington D.C. to begin an accomplished career in public service.

Passion for Healthcare Policy

Weems dedicated nearly 30 years to healthcare administration in the federal government. He first worked for Senator Harrison Schmitt before joining the Social Security Administration. Weems later held senior roles at the Department of Health and Human Services.

In 2008, President George W. Bush personally appointed Weems as administrator of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Though never officially confirmed, Weems brought immense expertise to managing these critical healthcare programs.

Leadership and Innovation

After leaving government, Weems served on corporate boards, invested in healthcare startups, led companies and consulted for firms in the healthcare sector.

His career was defined by a dedication to improving the healthcare system through effective policy, administration and innovation. Weems brought strategic leadership and management expertise to every role.

A Devoted Family Man

Weems cherished time with his beloved wife Jean and their three children Peter, Claire and Anna. He was very involved in his kids’ lives, never missing swim meets, school events or a chance to thoroughly interrogate new boyfriends and girlfriends.

The Weems family has many fond memories of weekly “Scary Movie Night,” Kerry’s favorite father-child tradition. Weems was a present, warm father and husband.

Life in Retirement

Weems and his wife Jean eventually settled in beautiful Sedona, Arizona upon retiring from government service. He loved daily hikes through Sedona’s iconic red rock landscapes.

Weems also rekindled his passion for travel in retirement, taking trips to South America, Antarctica and the Mediterranean. His zest for adventure and connection never dimmed.

The Gift of Friendship

One of Weems’ greatest talents was cultivating profound, lifelong friendships across lines of politics, profession and personality. For decades, his tight-knit group bonded over food, drinks and impassioned discourse.

Weems’ diverse, far-reaching network speaks to his warmth, humor and authentic interest in others. His ability to connect deeply enriched every sphere of his life.


Kerry Weems leaves behind a tremendous legacy of innovation and compassion throughout his prolific career and full personal life. His contributions to healthcare policy continue impacting lives while his spirit lives on through close family and friends. Weems will be remembered for his intellect, humor and dedication to the greater good.

A memorial service will be held at Greer’s Mortuary in Sedona, Arizona, at 11:00, Saturday, September 9, 2023.
