Matthew Carey Obituary: Early Life and Education

Born in Detroit, Carey was the son of James and Bridget Carey (née Sedrowski). After graduating high school, he continued his education at Wayne State University, where he earned his Masters/Specialist Degree.

During his college years, Carey played football for Wayne State, beginning a lifelong relationship with the sport. His experience as both a student and athlete would shape his future career in education.

An Accomplished Educator

Carey married his beloved wife Stacy Graham on July 17, 1999. That same year, he began what would become a 25+ year career teaching at Lincoln Park High School.

Generations of students benefited from Carey’s commitment to shaping young minds. He poured knowledge and life lessons into the community as an inspirational educator.

Coaching Through Football

Beyond the classroom, Carey served as a high school football coach at several Michigan schools including Lincoln Park, Wyandotte and Allen Park.

He used football to impart important life skills, build confidence and foster community. Carey continued supporting students’ growth on and off the field as a dedicated coach.

A Family Man

Carey leaves behind his wife Stacy and two sons, Jake and Max, who were his pride and joy. He always made time for family, even while balancing an active career.

Also surviving Carey are his mother Bridget; siblings Beth Arroyo and Rod Arroyo; and several nieces and nephews who will honor his memory.

A Community Mourns

Carey’s far-reaching impact across education and athletics in Michigan has been evident through community mourning after his passing. His wisdom, compassion and mentorship transformed many lives.

Though the community deeply feels this tragic loss, Carey’s legacy lives on through the students and athletes he inspired to reach their full potential in the classroom and far beyond.

Continuing His Legacy

Memorial contributions have been requested to the Autism Alliance of Michigan to support Carey’s legacy of empowering and advocating for youth.

Carey devoted his career to bettering students’ lives. Donations to this nonprofit provide resources for individuals with autism, extending his mission to help every child thrive.

Conclusion

From inspiring students in the classroom to instilling leadership skills through football, Matthew Carey devoted his life to elevating youth. His enduring legacy continues through the countless lives he influenced as an outstanding teacher, coach and community member. Though deeply missed, Carey’s impact will never be forgotten.
