Peter Olson Obituary: Early Life in North Dakota
Peter James Olson was born on January 21, 1977 in Ellendale, North Dakota to parents Darrel and Phyllis Olson. He was baptized at Christ the King Lutheran Church and raised in the community.
Olson attended school in Neche and Valley City, North Dakota, graduating from high school in 1995. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Concordia College in 1999, followed by a Master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology from Seattle Pacific University in 2007.
Passion for Helping Others
After graduating from Concordia College, Olson’s passion for service led him to join the Lutheran Volunteer Corps. He was placed at the Matt Talbot Center, an addiction treatment facility in downtown Seattle where he made a difference in many lives.
Olson later worked as a pediatric mental health specialist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, dedicating himself to the wellbeing of kids and families. Helping others through challenging times was a calling that defined his early career.
Building Community and Lasting Bonds
Wherever his path took him, from Seattle to Colorado to North Dakota and ultimately Atlanta, Peter Olson prioritized building community and forming meaningful connections.
His warmth, compassion, sense of humor and gift for listening allowed him to nurture lifelong friendships. He made people feel cared for and often was considered part of his friends’ families.

Valuing Faith and Family
Faith and family were pillars in Peter Olson’s life. He cherished his parents and brothers, keeping in close contact though often living far apart. The bond with his brothers was especially close.
As an uncle to five nieces, Olson reveled in his “Uncle Pete” role. He adored his nieces and the special times they shared.
Olson knew Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Though he struggled with mental health, his faith remained an anchor. He lived as a witness to God’s love and saving grace.
Adventurous and Outdoorsy Spirit
With a spirit of adventure, Olson explored places like New York, Japan, and the American South. He embraced new experiences, especially outdoor excursions hiking and photographing natural marvels.
As an avid football fan, Olson cheered on his beloved Washington Huskies and Seattle Seahawks. He fully embraced all of life’s joys and pastimes that brought him happiness.
A Light Extinguished Too Soon
Sadly, Peter Olson’s vibrant spirit and zest for living were often dampened by his struggle with mental illness. The darkness he battled ultimately overcame his light in this life.
While deeply mourning his passing, may his loved ones find comfort in knowing Peter’s burdens are now lifted and he rests in Heaven’s eternal light. The communities he touched will forever cherish his memory.
A memorial service will be held on September 30, 2023 in Fargo, North Dakota. Though gone too soon, Peter James Olson’s remarkable heart and spirit endure through all who loved him.
