Bicycle Accident Claims Life of Beloved Teacher Kevin Saint Clair
The Philadelphia community is mourning the loss of Kevin Saint Clair, a beloved teacher at J.R. Masterman Home and School. Saint Clair died last week at the age of 67 after sustaining severe injuries in a tragic bicycle accident.
About Kevin Saint Clair
Saint Clair was a dedicated middle school teacher and dean at Masterman for over 30 years before retiring in 2018. However, he continued to be actively involved at the school, often returning to substitute teach and volunteer at school events.
Kevin Saint Clair first joined the Masterman community as a 6th grade teacher in the 1980s. He quickly established himself as a caring, supportive educator who formed close bonds with his students. Over the years, Saint Clair moved into administrative roles, serving as a dean and helping shape the culture and values of the school.
Outside of work, Saint Clair was an avid cyclist who could often be seen riding through the streets of Philadelphia. He shared his passion for cycling with students, emphasizing the importance of health, fitness and outdoor activity.

Remembrances From the Masterman Community
The news of Kevin Saint Clair’s passing has elicited an outpouring of grief and memories from former students, colleagues and parents in the Masterman community.
“He was always smiling and made every student feel seen and valued,” said Sarah Johnson, a former student. “I’ll never forget how he went out of his way to help me feel comfortable starting middle school. He made Masterman feel like a family.”
Ellen Saint Clair, Kevin’s wife, spoke of his dedication to Masterman even after retirement: “He never stopped caring about the school. He loved running into former students around the city and catching up with them.”
“I watched both his sons go through Masterman, so he was part of our lives for over a decade,” recalled fellow teacher Meredith Jones. “Kevin embodied what it means to be part of the Masterman community. He is already so missed.”
Lasting Legacy
While the circumstances around his passing are heartbreaking, Kevin Saint Clair leaves behind an incredible legacy at J.R. Masterman. Over thousands of students were impacted by his commitment to education and community building.
Saint Clair was known for his compassion, sense of humor and ability to connect with middle schoolers during their transitional years. He set the tone for Masterman’s close-knit learning environment.

Beyond the classroom, Saint Clair inspired students to pursue fitness, creativity and service. The school’s arts programs, athletic programs and community service initiatives will continue to reflect his values and vision.
“Kevin was instrumental in making Masterman the special place it is today,” said Principal Joan Walker. “His giving spirit and passion for teaching influenced generations of students. He will be greatly missed but his impact lives on.”

The Saint Clair family has not yet released information about funeral and memorial services for Kevin Saint Clair. The Masterman community is planning various tributes to honor his life and legacy.
