Australian Surfer Logan Steinwede Dies From Apparent Suicide
The Australian surfing community is mourning the tragic loss of up-and-coming surfer Logan Steinwede, who died last week from an apparent suicide. Steinwede had battled mental health issues before taking his own life at the age of 25.
Promising Young Surfer Gone Too Soon
Logan Steinwede was considered one of Australia’s top young surfers, having competed around the world since the age of 10. The New South Wales native first jumped on a surfboard at age 5 and immediately took to the waves.
Steinwede trained under coach Amee starting at age 10 and quickly emerged as a rising talent in the junior surf circuit. Known for his aggressive, powerful style, Steinwede charged big waves and impressed with progressive aerial maneuvers.
“Logan surfed with so much speed and energy. He was a phenomenal surfer who could match it with the best junior surfers in the country,” said teammate Luke Davis.
As Steinwede rose up the competitive ranks, many expected him to one day join the World Surf League’s Championship Tour. But his promising career was cut tragically short.
Mental Health Struggles Preceded Death
According to friends, Logan Steinwede had battled mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, for years leading up to his death. The pressure and isolation of professional surfing appeared to take a toll on the young athlete.
“Logan was an incredible surfer, but underneath he struggled with his mental health,” said friend and fellow surfer Owen Wright. “I wish he had reached out for help.”
After a period of declining mental health, Steinwede died from an apparent suicide last week at the age of 25. His tragic death sent shockwaves through the Australian surfing community.
Outpouring of Grief From Surfing Community
News of Logan Steinwede’s sudden passing elicited an immediate outpouring of grief across social media from fellow surfers, coaches and friends.
“Absolutely gutted to hear about Logan. He was such a talented surfer and a great kid,” wrote coach Mick Parker. “Our thoughts are with his family during this terribly sad time.”
Many also expressed regret that Steinwede felt unable to ask for support with his mental health struggles.
Central Coast Surf Museum wrote: “It is with very heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Logan Steinwede. Heartfelt condolences to all of Logan’s family and friends.”
Steinwede’s mother, celebrated hairdresser Karina Ormsby, was instrumental in supporting her son’s surfing ambitions from a young age. But she was unable to save him from the mental health crisis that ultimately led to his suicide.
Legacy of Passionate Surfer & Mental Health Advocacy
While his bright future in surfing was devastatingly cut short, Logan Steinwede leaves behind a legacy defined by his fearless style, competitive drive and passion for the sport.
Steinwede’s tragic passing also serves as a reminder of the pressing need to provide better mental health resources and support within the surfing community.
“We need to talk about mental health more openly and make support more accessible,” pro surfer Tyler Wright wrote online. “So this doesn’t keep happening to talented young surfers like Logan.”
Funeral Arrangements Pending
Steinwede’s family has not yet released information about funeral services. The close-knit surfing community will come together to honor the life and mourn the loss of talented rising star Logan Steinwede.
His infectious energy and courageous surfing will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on as a reminder to prioritize mental health. If you or anyone you know is struggling, please reach out to a trusted friend, therapist or suicide prevention hotline.
